wow I am so impressed by how you handled this. I wonder, did the angels send him to you or you to him! ;-D SO many I've seen here have such venom and vitriol when facing those still in. in some cases its justified given the way they've been treated but constant anger can consume you. again thanks for providing such a mature logical example !

But out of a sample of 35,000 in the US, 215 JWs is of the magnitude I would expect. 215 / 35,000 = 6/10 of 1%, which is not far from the actual proportion of JWs in the US - actually a bit higher.
Yeah, on second glance I agree with you. First time around I thought the numbers were off a bit but generally accurate. But if you look at the data for Muslims and Hindus (also extreme minority religions in the USA), they seem about right too.
Did anyone notice the amazing correlation between hindus, postgrads, and $100k+ salaries? Wow. I know quite a few Desis (Indians) who are not making that kind of cake and working thier butts off in software. I guess for all of those, there are plenty who are doctors, DBAs, hotel owners, etc...
This has been a fascinating study for me despite the association with God's Chosen People.

Hook Lines or Phrases Jehovah's Witnesses Use to Control You
by flipper into control a person, or control a group of people , any cult , including jehovah's witnesses , have to gain your trust that they are the authority on what you need to know.
even people have been known to use these " catch phrases " to gain trust , or " hook lines " as you'd call them to gain control over groups of people or individually in their own lives.
see if you are familiar with these phrases which empower the sender of the phrase , but demands rapt allegiance from listeners to be the " gospel truth " without challenge , which can take the listeners power away.

NOT FEELING IT- I think 4 MY LOVE was saying her witness husband used that hook line " marry me " to get her to marry HIM - a Jehovah's Witness ! Just wanted to clear that up.
no lack of clarity there Mr. Flip! I was just being flippant. You can relate, no?

4mylove: "marry me" ... I think that's a quote from Arrested Development. you must be in the wrong thread. (I hope someone here has watched)
here's my pet peeve quote from the loyal faithful ones when checking on you or some other disenfranchised fader:
"how are you doing?" or how is he/she doing?"this always hacks me off. I typically answer "just fine!" and tell them how life hasn't fallen to crap without th WTS. it's basic code for *what* are you doing as a witness and can they write you off as a heathen.
the follow up is usually "does he/she/y'all go to meetings anymore?"

These statistics are not very accurate.
And you know that how, exactly?
Man, I think you need to go a little lighter on the caffeine. It's been a while since I took a basic stats class in -- gasp -- college, but the point regarding sample size is valid. I think we all have our stereotypes of what witnesses are. Many of these are based in fact. Some may be regional proclivities. This survey confirms many of them, but I think most of us would admit that JWs wouldn't answer or even take a survey like this because of general distrust of "Satan's system".
Just my $.02

This is fun. The Pew Survey is fantastic.
I didn't see anyone comment on the marital status item of "Living with Partner". I noticed the sample size was 211 people. Not very big, but I think most JWs would think it a bad witness to answer these kinds of questions (paranoia alert!)
Anyway, there were 1% that answered "Living with Partner"... aka, "I'm a JW or a study but not for long if you keep that up". Classic. so 1% of 211 is 1-2 JWs. I'm guessing thier pioneer partner or PO was not in earshot when that survey question was asked.
Regardless, I don't think many JWs that emailed the snarky "We are the fastest growing religion so we must be right" spam will be forwarding this item.
Keep covering your ears and screaming "I'm not listening". Why stop now?

To Cross Or Not to Cross you be the judge!
by Hope4Others inas a solar-phallic symbol, i have no problems with it at all.
it symbolizes generation and regeneration... birth, life, death, rebirth... .
i have observed that many people wear crosses that have no religious identity.

I know a particularly gnat-straining jw who wears a bracelet with the hebrew tetragrammaton on it. how hilarious is that? I mean what difference is there between that and idolatry of the cross? rhetorical. none at all. anyway she wears it to use as a conversation starter. weird. if this person wasn't self-righteous over so many other things it would be less crazy (and annoying). I have no prejudice over other people's icons or beliefs that are not imposed upon me.

this board has really developed my thought process. I've read a lot that I agree and disagree with but the important thing is it gets me thinking. that in itself is better than passively ("humbly") accepting everything you hear on face value at the hall or wherever you may roam.

Wow, that is exceedingly lame. I remember when I was a young, good, little kool-aid-drinker some muckety-muck, grand-poobah type visited from HQ. He started his talk by observing the dearth of sheep sitting in the front two rows (by that I mean there weren't any). so he decided to take a stand asking sheep to herd on up. I did. :-( so did the PO and about 5 others. I'm now disturbed at how ready I was to do everything that "god" told me to from the platform. sigh. I'm a different person now!

what have jws got against beards ?
by looloo inand it really used to annoy me that jesus and john the baptist both had such neat and well trimmed beards in the watchtower literature , how unlikley would that be in reality ?
also they never wore a suit so why do "true christians "have to wear one , is all about appearences by any chance and giving a false impression ?

I've heard from my dad that there are a few more elders at the training sessions who have facial hair. his BOE doesn't disparage based on facial hair but the are probably a LOT more that do. in any case this was a big turn off to me. I guess in a way it did symbolize rebellion for me. but it also got me thinking about many of the other contradictions as well. too much free thinking will be the death of them. not anytime soon I think but eventually.
